An open letter to William L. Moore

    First of all, let me begin by stating for the record that I am not a
    "forger", a "hoaxer", a "fabricator" or a "counterfeiter"; nor, to
    the best of my knowledge, have I ever participated in any illegal or
    un-American activity in connection with my more than eight-year
    involvement with the MJ-12 controversy. Furthermore, to the best of
    my knowledge and belief, none of my colleagues and associates has
    participated in any such activities either.
    
    Rumors circulating to the effect that I am some sort of government
    agent or "disinformation" expert are totally false. In spite of
    pronouncements made principally by John Lear and others associated
    with him, I am not on the US Government's (or any other
    government's) payroll. Nor did I enjoy any sort of "control
    position" with respect to the recent "UFO Cover-up?...Live!"
    television documentary.
    
    Whether the MJ-12 and associated documents are authentic, and
    indeed, whether the entire MJ-12 story has any truth to it at all
    remains an entirely open question. I and my colleagues have
    conducted our investigation into this matter in our own way and

     to Paul Bennewitz, and he played a part in having Bennewitz

     3.  That his informants, Condor and Falcon, worked for the
     government, and the information released by them during his
     television show "UFO COVER-UP LIVE", was false information.

     4.  His association with the government was to gain
     information of their operations and that he had his own
     reasons for working for them.

     What ever his reasons might have been, they certainly have the
appearance of having nothing to do with the advancement of Ufological
Studies.

Response to debunking of MJ-12

        totally incomprehensible failure to deal with the relevant information 
with regard to these documents. It is very easy to claim any documents are 
bogus. It is a very different matter to establish the validity of those 
claims.

      The trivial discrepancies to which they refer as noted by the 
National Archives with regard to these documents are easily explained. For 
example, Klass has said his research showed that a brief memo from General 
Robert Cutler at the White House to General Nathan Twining at the Pentagon 
pointing out that there would be a slight change of plans with regard to a 
meeting two days later is phony because Cutler had left the country 11 
days earlier. This is absurd. Cutler was gone, but he had two full-time 
heavy duty assistants! He had instructed them to keep material moving out 
of his in-basket. A trivial matter such as the slight change in a 
classified briefing would certainly have been handled by them in response 
to any request from Eisenhower. The memo is *not* signed by Mr. Cutler. 
Anybody faking such a memo would presumably have attempted to make it 
clear that it was Operation Majestic 12 rather than MJ-12 and would also 
have made clear that MJ-12 or Majestic 12 dealt with flying discs or 
flying saucers. It would be silly to go through the work to fake such a 
memo using old typewriters and old paper and yet not make it totally

Another debunking of MJ-12

     We  have  already  published  our  exclusive  information from Dr. Ernest 
Taves,  a  very close friend of Dr. Donald Menzel, who apparently was "MJ-10". 
Taves,  like  others  who  knew  Menzel well, cannot believe that the long-de-
ceased  former  director of Harvard Observatory could have had this above-men-
tioned  knowledge  of  UFO reality and still have written 3 anti-saucer books, 
and  still  have debunked UFOs emotionally at every opportunity. Yet Moore and 
Friedman  see  nothing amiss here, and have in fact written long, detailed re-
buttals  re  the  "Menzel Connection" and all other negative evidence that has 
been  brought  up  in regard to "MJ-12". They do seem to believe what they are 
saying!

     CUFOS,  in  an editorial by Jerry Clark in the May-June issue of the "In-
ternational  UFO Reporter", and in a more recent press release, seems general-
ly supportive of "MJ-12", and claims that the "verdict is still open."

     MUFON  has expressed various opinions, swaying pro and con. They used our 
Taves  material in a recent issue of their Journal, and in the August issue of 
their  Newsletter,  edited  by MUFON's Massachusetts director James Melesciuc, 
they  state:  "The  results of the MJ-12 circus created by Moore, Shandera and 
Friedman  could  be detrimental to the future of document research. The hunger

MJ-12 documents labeled hoax

              of  Attachments  to  the Hillenkoetter Briefing. The number, "092447" 
      is  not  an  authentic  Executive Order number, but rather represents 
      the  date the order was signed - 9/24/47. CAUS's research at the Tru-
      man  Library  shows  that no EOs were signed that day; that EO's 9891 
      thru  9896 all cover the period in question; that none are missing or 
      out of order; and that none have anything to do with MJ-12 or UFOs.
      
      
      Other  CAUS evidence includes points which have been covered by Para-
      Net,  Saucer  Smear  and  CSICOP, such as the apparent fraudulence of 
      the  Cutler  to  Twining  memo,  the irregular dating format, and the 
      seemingly  shoddy quality of research employed by the Moore-Shandera-
      Friedman  team  (MSF).  CAUS  also  takes  great exception to several 
      other,  ancillary  documents, released by MSF in April, such as a CIA 
      memo  and  a  briefing  paper on "Project Aquarius." They report that 
      MSF  began de-emphasizing these documents over the course of the sum-
      mer,  especially  after  CAUS  confronted William Moore with the evi-

Klass in the release conclusively showed Majestic-12 to be a hoax;
in fact none of the members seemed to acknowledge that any damage
was done whatsoever.      Below are some of the objections raised
by Klass, and selected ans-wers given by the team members.o Item:
Robert Cutler was in Europe at the time the Cutler-to-Twining Memo
was allegedly written.      Friedman: "That's a stupid argument. The
memo wasn't signed by       Cutler. [But] he gave his people
instructions to keep the ball       rolling while he was gone.
"We have two other memos from Cutler to Twining, which we've
gotten at the Library of Congress, one is signed and the other
isn't. The one that's not signed has an `/s/' indicating where
the       original was signed."             Moore: "The absence
of a signature on the document is consistent       with the fact
that Cutler was overseas when it was written. If the       document
had been signed, then we would have reason to worry.       o Item:
The lack of the characteristic "Eagle" watermark found on all of
Cutler's memoranda stationery.       Friedman: "But how many? They
didn't have at the Eisenhower Library       OR the National Archives,
these two Cutler memoranda that we found       at the Library of
Congress! Absence of evidence is not evidence for       absence."

Majestic-12: docs fake, but mj12 real??

        foreclosures and intrigues, something to parallel the style of
the National Inquirer.  The most apparent travesty appears in
files the various report the existence of the MAJESTIC TWELVE.
     I don't intend to debunk the MAJESTIC TWELVE scenario.  Many
sources exist now who will verify the existence of this secret
society.  Still, there appears within these reports additional
material with very inflammatory overtones that should either be
immediately supported or completely resisted.  In particular,
I've seen some claims from one man who accuses President Bush of
direct involvement with the South American drug cartels, CIA
plots to reduce world population with the AIDs virus, the peril
of Freemasonry, and on and on and on.  This is not a responsible
investigative technique and should not appear in these files. 
This kind of information also has the dreadful earmark of
disinformation, whether directed by the author, or as a result of
manipulation from his sources.
     MAJESTIC TWELVE is apparently not a mythical organization. 
Still, the use of the name may be obsolete and the people
involved in it may have either created another vehicle for
themselves or divested their positions.  I've been led to
understand that many changes took place in recent years, possibly
