     That accusation is nothing new among those who have made it their
     business to investigate UFO sightings.
     St the time of the crash near the Roswell Army Air Force Base, military
     officials initially idnetified the object that crashed as a UFO.
     But later the military changed its official version of what the object
     actually was, identifying it as a miguided weather research balloon.
     Schmitt and many of his colleagues say there is overwhelming evidence
     proving otherwise.
     Schmitt and other UFO investigators have relied on testimony over the
     years from military intelligence officers who were at the crash site,
     their family members, and relatives of a rench hand who discovered the
     crash site, to peice together their version of the Roswell UFO mystery.
     Schmitt said he and a colleague recently interviewed two men who were
     once stationed at RAAFB  and who were involved in the recovery operation
     at the crash site.
     Most of the military personnel who had first-hand knowledge of the
     crash are now dead, Schmitt said.
     The men interviewed, the chief of security at the crash site, and a
     military intelligence officer, are two of the few crash-site witnesses
     still alive, he said.

UFO sightings in history

        unusual "boats" or "chariots" they use to travel back and forth
between the Earth and heavens.  Is it just coincidence that man
needs to creates these similar myths? Or have these stories
simply been passed along from one civilization to another even
somehow crossing the Atlantic to South America? Or did something
real and physical happen to these civilizations?

 There is enough evidence available to support either the myth or
the fact. It all depends on how you want to view the evidence. We
can't provide any definite, indisputable evidence since the
peoples who wrote these stories are no longer with us. So it's up
to each of us, individually, to examine the evidence for
ourselves and reach our own conclusions.

 In UFOlogy today, we hear reports that tell us that the UFOs are
controlled by evil, four foot tall, gray skinned aliens who
mutilate cattle and abduct humans. We also hear the UFOs are
piloted by an intelligence that is benevolent and only wants us
to mature and evolve into a higher state of consciousness.

Soviet hopes for launching a longterm exploration of Mars ther were pinned on 
Phobos 2, which bbegan experiencing malfunctions and the was completely lost 
from contact in the last week of March.

On March 29, Soviet space officials announced that Phobos 2 was " 99 percent 
lost for good."

Two leading space scientists based in Flagstaff are amoung the Americans 
watching with interest to see what direction the Soviet space program will 
take. Further, they'll be watching the development of a whole new set of 
political and social concerns inside the USSR.

Hugh Keiffer and Laurence Soderblom of the U.S. Geological Survey's Center for 
Astrogeology in Flagstaff feel the two losses are a definite seback to Soviet 
hopes for mounting long-term Marian exploration theough the remainder of this 
century. It is exploration which would have culminated with a manned landing on 
the red planet sometime in the first decade of the 21st Century.

Soderblom, who had been working with French scientists on an pexperimental 
package on the lost Phobos flight and who had a tentative invitation to put an

   But Fisher  has said  he believes  the plane  could be  one of  the five.
   Salvors "stumbled  across" the  wreckage in  1971 during  a search  for a
galleon and were in  the vicinity again last week, Kincaid  said.  "Mel just
wanted to pull it up out of curiosity," he said.  "We ran across it again on
a  whim.   We're  not  in  the business  of  looking  for  Bermuda  Triangle
wreckage."
   The five Avengers left  a World War II training field  at Fort Lauderdale
on  a training  mission  Dec.   5, 1945,  each  carring  a pilot  and  radio
operator.
   The flight  leader was  soon lost  in hazy  skies, despite  the prevalent
clear and sunny weather.  Radio contact  was maintained until the planes ran
out of fuel still searching for the way home.
   A Martin  Mariner, a twin-engine  patrol plane  with 13 aboard,  left the
Banana River Naval Air  Station near Cocoa Beach the next  morning to search
for the squadron.
   The plane failed to return and no trace was ever found.  No human remains
   was found  in the Avenger salvaged  this week, according to  Fisher's son
Kim.

Report of increased UFO activity in Australia

this country, a UFO seems to be buzzing the town of Gulf Breezes in
the Florida Panhandle. Andrus, who spent four days in the Pensacola
suburb at the request of MUFON State Director Donald Ware, reports
that a gentleman who wishes to remain anonymous has taken 16
"amazingly clear and detailed" polaroid photos of the object, as
well as a Beta videotape. The object is reportedly of the classic
disk variety. Adding to the mystery, another anonymous photographer
sent his entire 35mm camera to a newspaper with undeveloped film
inside. Whent developed, the film showed the same object. Andrus
says that efforts are being made to coax the photographer out of the
closet. He acknowledged that it could be the same chap as the one who
took the polaroids, but adds that there are several other independent
witnesses to the sightings.Other hotspots which seem to be flaring
up include the Texarkana, Arkansas, area, and parts of Michigan,
Georgia, and (shades of NIGHT SIEGE), the Hudson Valley. No one is
declaring a UFO flap at this stage, however, that may be partially
due to caution by local MUFON investigators not to muddy the waters

Apollo program ufo sighting

     At approximately 11:00 p.m. he stepped outside the Data 
Processing Center building for a smoke and to view the test 
firing.  He noticed a bright light approaching rapidly from the 
east, which he took to be a light from a plane at first.  However, 
it approached the Test Facility at an unbelievable speed, slowing 
over the Saturn V-B test stand before continuing on towards the 
Saturn IV-B test stand, whereupon it stopped and stood over the 
exhaust blast from the test firing for a minute to a minute and a 
half.  He described the UFO as 200 feet in diameter.  It hovered 
at 3,000-5,000 feet during the stage 2 captive firing, directly 
over the exhaust blast updraft until the firing ended.  Then it 
approached at about 30 mph, came over the data processing 
center for about another minute, and left travelling almost 
straight up.  

     Mr. Allen states there were 19 people who witnessed the UFO 
where he stood and another 9 to 11 people on the roof of the 
Control Facility Building, who had been filming the test firing 
and also saw it.  No pictures of this test firing were ever shown

More on the Apollo UFO sighting

        rocket is correctly referred to as the S-II-T or S-II-1, 
depending on the version.  I talked to Bob Lessels, a Media 
Affairs officer at Marshall Space Flight Center (205/544-6539) 
and he provided me with a chronology of possible dates.  I also 
talked to Jack Allen again to verify to the best of his 
recollection which test firing it was, since it is unlikely now 
that it was the first one.  

    A bit of background about the facility itself.  The NASA 
facility in question is located approximately 60 miles East of 
New Orleans on the Gulf Coast in Hancock County, Mississippi, on 
the East Pearl River.  It has undergone a couple of name changes 
since 1966.  Until very recently it has been known as the 
National Space Technology Laboratory (NSTL), and its new name is 
the J.C. Stennis Space Center.  The Public Affairs 
representatives at the facility are Max Herring and Ms. Myran 
Webb (601/688-3341).  

    The first captive test firing of the S-II-T occurred on April 
23, 1966, according to Bob Lessels.  He used as a reference a 
NASA publication authored by David Akens entitled the "Saturn
